Tiril Nysted
Tiril is only 22- years old, but she plans to keep after it until she’s 80. And the reason she’s so stoked to keep after it is because of her stoke for the Great Outdoors. For Tiril, there nothing better than skiing in the wild mountains of her homeland Norway; rocks, ice, trees and especially snow- it’s all about being in the ‘elements’
.
It makes sense, because she learned to ski before she can remember, and at the ripe age of 10, she set her heels free and has been telemarking for the past decade. And although she’s on the wave of modern free-heeling, Tiril learned the old-fashioned way- skinny skis and leather boots. This may explain why she makes it look so easy on plastic boots and BD skis.
And as a Norwegian, she has a connection to the heritage of this sport. Telemarking has been going on up there since recorded history, mostly as the only form of winter transport. But Tiril intends to keep the trend alive, by skiing hard all winter up there, mostly at her favorite spot, Roldal. She plans to make a mid-winter trip to Iran to ski some big peaks and spread the free-heel vibe. And you’ll be hearing about her skiing in the future because Tiril’s gonna be tele-ing for at least another 60 years.
